This 6.5 mile balloon hike has a lot of variety, combining ocean views, different vegetation, creeks, and the possibility of a waterfall. We will hike at a medium pace with 1,620 ft in elevation gain.
McNee Ranch State Park has a steep track but the views are worth seeing. Starting from the San Pedro Valley, the trails are well guided, reducing the overall effort and the distance too.
There are patches of understory chock-full of natives, including California coffeeberry, hazelnut, toyon, poison oak, creambush, sticky monkeyflower, thimbleberry, currant, ceanothus, and coyote brush and you may find these varieties on the trail. Different varieties of this evergreen native bloom in stages during winter.
We will also stop for lunch around noon, and then hike back down. As this is a balloon hike, part of the way will be the same, and part of the way will be different.
